About 60% of coconut oil is comprised of lauric acid. In fact, coconut oil with it’s potent anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties, contains more lauric acid than any other substance on earth.
Once ingested, the human body converts lauric acid into a substance called monolaurin – a material only found in one other liquid: breast milk. During an interview I did with author Nora Gedgaudas in 2012, she called lauric acid “The most antibacterial substance known to man”.

Study: Coconut Oil Kills 93% of Colon Cancer Cells
The groundbreaking research into coconut oil and its use as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of cancer was conducted in 2013 by researchers at the University of Adelaide in Australia. The study compared the effects of lauric acid (a medium chain fatty acid) versus butyrate (a short chain fatty acid) on their abilities to kill cancer cells, modify antioxidant glutathione levels, generate antioxidants, and modify cell cycle phases in two types of colon cancer cells.
What researchers found was remarkable. The lauric acid, being far more effective than butyrate, induced apoptosis or cell death in the cancer cells. “Lauric acid induced high levels of ROS [reactive oxygen species]”, also known as free radicals, and killed the cancer cells my inducing oxidative stress. This is the same thing that occurs to cells exposed to snake venom – the cells are poisoned through the action of oxidation. Furthermore, the lauric acid significantly reduced the cells levels levels of glutathione, which is its ability to defend itself.
Restated, while the cancer cells were poisoned by the lauric acid from an attack of oxidative stress, the lauric acid also simultaneously reduced glutathione, the cells only defense against oxidative stress.
3 More Studies on Coconut Oil vs Cancer
- A Japan study conducted in 2009 found that lauric acid inhibited an enzyme critical for the survival of prostate cancer cells. The enzyme is called 5-alpha-reductase, and by inhibiting this enzyme, lauric acid “inhibited the proliferation of prostate cancer cells.”
- In an interesting Brazilian study, nanoparticles of iron were coated with 3 different types of fatty acids: lauric acid, citric acid, and meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) to investigate their cytotoxicities. The difference in cytotoxic responses suggests that the length of the fatty acid used to coat the iron nanoparticles is a key factor in understanding its ability to kill cancer cells. Unlike the other two types of lipid coatings, “cells treated with lauric acid-coated nanoparticles at high concentration (588 or 840 microg-iron/mL) displayed morphological features of apoptosis”, meaning they killed cancer cells, and the researchers said that their findings indicate “a promising therapeutic application for the lauric acid-coated nanoparticle in the treatment of cancer cells.”
- In 2014, Malaysian women with stage 3 and 4 breast cancer were given virgin coconut oil to study the effect on their quality of life. In addition to a reduction of the negative side effects of chemotherapy, compared to the control group, patients given virgin coconut oil “had better scores for symptoms including fatigue, dyspnea, sleep difficulties, and loss of appetite compared to the control group”. The virgin coconut oil group also “exhibited improvement in breast functioning and symptom scores for body image, sexual function, future perspective, and breast symptoms.”
Beyond its promising cancer-combating properties, the list of benefits from coconut oil consumption is lengthy and growing along with our understanding. Woman Cures Skin Cancer with Coconut Oil + Baking Soda
When the mother of writer Kyneret Azizo was diagnosed with skin cancer, she received surgery to remove a cancerous lesion from the crown of her head. Within weeks the lesion reappeared, and this time it grew more rapidly than before. Surgeons ended up removing the lesion two more times, and each time the cancer quickly returned.
After reading online accounts of people using baking soda to cure cancer, Kyneret decided to take matters into her own hands, concocting a coconut oil + baking soda paste, which they applied topically to her mother’s cancer lesion. “I did a modification on my own, using coconut oil instead of water, because raw organic coconut oil is really efficient in the regeneration of skin cells. Timeline of coconut oil/baking soda skin cancer treatment:
Day 1: Applied twice that day, the scab fell away during the night, exposing the basal cell.
Day 2-5: The basal cell began shrinking. Flaky skin appeared around the scabbed area, but the moisturizing coconut oil cleared up the dry/dead skin cells.
Day 6: The basal cell was no longer visible and bleeding had ceased.
Day 14: The wound was much smaller.

Since basal cells have roots beneath the surface of the skin, Azizo’s mother awaits tests to find out if it has been cleared. Until then, they continue their topical treatment and hold a positive mindset along with a healthier diet and lifestyle.

Since coconut oil and lauric acid are natural substances, they cannot be patented and made into drugs to be sold for profit, and thus, funding research on coconut oil as a cancer treatment is not something that pharmaceutical companies have any interested in.
The studies that have already been conducted on coconut oil have found it to be a powerful anti-cancer substance that can benefit us in a myriad of ways. After reading the above research, a person of logic would, upon being diagnosed with cancer, consume coconut oil as one of many nutritional strategies to destroy and eliminate the cancer from their body.
