“The compound is like a little bomb-carrying monkey riding on the back of a Trojan horse,” says Henry Lai, UW bioengineering professor and co-author of the study.
Scientists have discovered that an extract of the traditional Chinese herb ‘Sweet Wormwood’ called Artemisinin, can kill up to 98% of cancer cells within 16 hours of being administered.
Published in Journal of Life Sciences, researchers conducting the study discovered that the herb can eliminate 28% of breast cancer cells, and when combined with iron, it can eliminate up to 98% of the cancer cells, all without any negative effect on healthy cells.
Although the mechanism by which Artemisinin eliminates cancer cells is not well understood, it is well-known for its potent anti-malaria activity, and science is revealing extraordinary promise for healing cancer as well. Numerous scientific studies have shown its anti-cancer athleticism, including:
- A 2009 study found Artemisinin inhibited growth of human prostate cancer cells. “We have observed that artemisinin treatment triggers a stringent G1 cell cycle arrest of LNCaP (lymph node carcinoma of the prostate) human prostate cancer cells,” the researchers concluded.
- A 2012 study found Artemisinin inhibited growth of human breast cancer cells.
Washington University researchers discovered that the artemisinin-based compound was highly selective at targeting and killing human leukemia cells.
Dr Tomikazu Sasaki, chemistry professor and the study’s lead author, said that “artemisinin-based compound is like a special agent planting a bomb inside the cell. This compound is selective and effective for eliminating different cancers including leukemia, breast and prostate in laboratory animals”.
Highly Toxic to Cancer Cells, Harmless to Healthy Cells
Traditional cancer therapies such as Chemotherapy and Radiation are barbaric treatments that poison and burn the entire body. Statistics show that 75% of physicians worldwide refuse Chemotherapy for themselves, and not surprisingly, scientists in the U.S. have found that Chemotherapy actually boosts cancer growth. Most people would live longer if they did no treatments at all rather than radiation or chemotherapy.
Unlike Chemotherapy and radiation which kill countless healthy cells, the artemisinin derivative kills 12,000 cancer cells for every healthy cell!
Researchers have found that, when partnered with iron, this artemisinin-based compound is much more lethal at killing cancer cells. Cancer cells are said to utilize iron to maintain rapid tumor growth, and when the iron enters the cancer cells with artemisinin bound to its surface, iron reacts with the artemisinin, producing free radicals which kill the cancer cell.“The compound is like a little bomb-carrying monkey riding on the back of a Trojan horse,” says Henry Lai, UW bioengineering professor and co-author of the study. “Most currently available drugs are targeted to specific cancers. This compound works on a general property of cancer cells, their high iron content.”
